Michael Sam Can Make NFL History As First Openly Gay Player

Let’s clear the issue up right now. Michael Sam is the 2013 co-SEC Defensive Player of the Year from Missouri. He is a 3rd Round projected prospect. He has a lot to do to prove himself on a team. He is gay. 

Missouri Football Player Michael Sam, who recently became the first potential NFL player to be openly gay.

And…………….so what? From what I can tell from my years of playing sports, it doesn’t if someone is gay, straight, sleeps with cars, aliens, whatever, if you are able to perform & do your job, you will be successful, no matter what. 

Yes, this is going to be a big deal, especially in the NFL, where many people are not comfortable with the situation, especially in the higher offices of teams around the league, & they will never tell the media that, but football is still considered a “meathead” game, which is not fair because there are so many very smart, very talented people in the NFL outside of just football smarts, and some are very aware of the social world around them. 

If Sam can not perform on the field, not do well at the NFL Scouting Combine, doesn’t do well in training camps, OTAs, etc., he will not be on a roster. Flat out. He knows that. 

I commend him for coming out, but guess what, if he is playing for my favorite team – the Detroit Lions, if he messes up, I would get on his case for his play just like I would any other player. I could care less about his personal life and what he does in his private life. 

Last time I checked, the NFL & sports in general didn’t have a separate league for just gay men, which means we are all equal. Let’s act like it.
